Have you ever been Fire Island? The long, thin island is only 90 minutes from New York, but it feels like a universe far away. No cars allowed; people walk barefoot on wooden walkways; foxes and deer meander through the sand dunes. Here, in collaboration Maryn, Alex Bates and her husband Andrew Hoffman showed us their tent …

Falling Fire Island: We are very old, so before my husband met me in 1892 he started going there to visit friends [laughs]. Then we started renting houses together. We rented and fell in love with the village of Saltaire. Then, almost 30 years ago, this house was made available. You know instinctively when you go somewhere, do you fall in love?

In the village of Saltaire: There’s not much here: a grocery store, a tennis and sailing club, a library, firefighters, and town hall. The young woman who runs the library program is a preschool teacher. She has created new programs for children and is becoming the core of the community.

In island life: Get out here and there is nothing to do. It is a sanctuary. I usually have a knee in the garden. I have different gardening playlists, depending on my weekly mood; and we exploded the music and ripped out the weeds.

On the perfect painting: The interior of the house is all European White Fine Paintings 0001.. I’m crazy about painting. It is pure white, untinted in any direction like the painter’s white. We painted the floor, ceiling and walls the same color. We use a lot of brightness so that when light enters, it bounces all over the room. You feel like you’re in a tiny bowl.

Collection: Our collections are taking over right now. We arrange the shells and stones according to color. I comb the beach to get oyster shells. We have a basket of horns that the deer spilled in the front yard.

When hosting friends: We have a lot of impromptu dinners with other families in Saltaire. You crossed the promenade and said, ‘Have you had dinner yet? We’re having a party. ‘ People walk through your door. My husband throws chicken or roasted fish. Local fishing boats are taken directly to the dock for scallops, lobster and cod. Also, we make corn on the stick, of course.

On the key to a comfortable bed: My husband and I have opposing views: her priority is a harder mattress and I want something softer. In the high summer, when it gets hot, we don’t have alternating current, so it’s just a light cotton button.

When reading in bed: Andrew is a mystery reader, especially like Swedish authors Henning Mankell. I’ve been reading Paul Hawkin’s Sweepstakes, on solutions to climate change. He is one of my heroes; Right now I’m reporting on his work. It’s my favorite book This is not an ordinary time By Doris Kearns Goodwin, about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. He talks about these amazing sleepy parties they would have with Winston Churchill in the White House.

When you wake up: I like it from early in the morning. I like to throw a coffee and start nature on the back deck. There are so many birds and butterflies at dawn.

Late stays: We are tough and we stay here as long as possible. We need to get the pipes out before they freeze, usually before we give Thanks. We had a snowstorm for a year on November 15th and it was horrible to be home while it was snowing. It was so beautiful, like being in a snow globe.

Thank you, Alex!
