Last week, my friend John Jannuzzi, heart pounding, Alex asked his girlfriend at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here’s how it went down …
John: We both knew we wanted to get married. With the pandemic, there never seemed to be a right time to propose. Then we moved to Brooklyn a dog, and I was going to be like f * ck.
Earlier this year, I started doing ring research. Alex loves sapphires. When it started to get worse, I told my parents that I was looking at the rings, and I realized that my mother had sapphire. (She must be pretty, mom!) Dad gave it to her like she did 20 years ago.
I brought the sapphire to Brooklyn. Walking through the city with gems was the weirdest feeling. I was sorry Uncut gems. There is a sapphire in my pocket. If they move me, it’s a bad day for that to happen.
I brought the sapphire home and it moved a lot throughout the apartment.
Alex: Wait, I’m hearing this for the first time.
John: Yes! In the shaving kit, I went into several places in the bathroom and kept moving from home. Then I arrived Laurel Pantin, a jewelry consultant, and Millie and Noah, jewelry designer. We started this crazy Instagram DM conversation. They’re freaking out, I’m freaking out, we’re sending the designs back and forth. We were designing it all over Instagram. I was, wow, what a world!
Once I get the ring, I am very worried about the proposals. I send messages to all his friends. Everyone in New York City, except Alex, knew I would propose.
But I had to come up with a plan. When we started talking, we often went to the Met to see the Degas dancers. I thought it would be a very good place to propose that.
Alex: I always want to go to Metera to see my dancers.
John: So I said, I have a few days off, let’s go to the Met.
Alex: I was pleased, respectful.
John: First, I went to Google Maps to study the Met’s plan. There is a beautiful arch leading to the statue of a Degas dancer. And he has two other Degas on his side. Degas is happening all over the place. So I knew I had to drive to the porch.
Actually, the day we go to the museum will come. I have the ring in my pocket and I was terrified that they would caress me in safety and that it would be like what is in the box. But hopefully we get it.
Then Alex says he’s hungry. We end up in the cafeteria in the basement of the Met, in the corner opposite where I should be.
The route I had planned – to climb the grand staircase, the photo exhibition, etc. – It wouldn’t happen. So now we’re going through the galleries and looking at the paintings, beautiful, beautiful, magnificent, okay – trying to find what I’m looking for.
And then I see a figure sitting on a bench in a black-clad gallery, and I realize it’s Hunter. I asked my old friend Hunter to go there to take pictures secretly. But the hardest thing about Hunter is that they have rainbow hair. So they are very popular. They wore a black hood to cover their hair. Hunter dressed as a demon was keeping people out of the gallery!
Alex: I wish there was a reverse photo of him sitting there.
John: I was, that is, either Hunter or I will die for this reaper. All we saw was the back of the head. They wore a large hooded coat.
Alex: I am still completely forgotten. I didn’t realize Hunter. As a five-year-old I was on the right track with the dancers.
John: So far, of course, my head is running but I keep it fresh. I couldn’t speak after entering the gallery. I said something like that, yes, this reminds me of when we first started, hahaha. I drive slowly towards the arch. I had planned everything I wanted to say. I pull out the ring box and get on one knee. At that point, I realize that there is NO IDEA that is happening.
Alex: I immediately got on my knees and the panda hugged me. I don’t even remember what he said, I started crying. I held on so hard.
John: It was great, I didn’t have to defend my case!
Alex: I could hear Hunter clicking.
John: And I said, that’s Hunter. And then he screamed loudly.
Alex: I did a scene in Met.
John: People started coming to us. The docent was like that too, congratulations.
Alex: It was like a motel. The happiness I felt was wonderful.
John: He was euphoric.
Alex: I was throwing masks and crying to separate her from him. It was anything I could do to feel closer to him. It was a very intimate public moment.
John: We threw away the masks for a second! We are both fully embedded!
Alex: Then we went to a nearby bar and grabbed a martinis. I was like that the whole time, I feel very dirty! I hadn’t showered in two days. I was like, why didn’t you tell me to take a shower ?!
John: But I was glad, if I told him he had to take a shower, he would know he knew something.
Alex: The ring is very killer. Right now I’m all excited and really appreciate this ring.
John: There is always the fear of people knowing whether they will like the ring or not. But as soon as I put it on, I said, that ring is Alex, Alex is that ring.
