MUMBAI (Reuters) – India said on Sunday it had brought in temporary officials from the consulate in Kandahar (a major city in southern Afghanistan) as Taliban fighters remain in control as international forces withdraw.

“Due to the fighting near the city of Kandahar, Indian workers have returned for the time being,” said Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for India’s foreign ministry.

“India is closely monitoring the ongoing security situation in Afghanistan,” Bagchi said, adding that the Indian consulate in Kandahar is being run temporarily by its staff.

Taliban officials said on Friday that a group of Sunni Muslim insurgents had taken over 85% of Afghan territory as the United States and others withdrew most of their troops after 20 years of fighting. It was confirmed by Afghan government officials as a propaganda campaign.

India’s foreign minister called for a reduction in violence on Friday, saying the state of the war-torn nation has a direct bearing on regional security.
