Despite the services available to those with a physical address, it took time to convince neighbors to sign up. Many had never heard of Google Maps and were suspicious of Joshi’s staff, mingling with Indian officials Shack Rehabilitation Authority. He hired local nonprofit students door-to-door and to inform people about the program.
More than a thousand houses, drainage chambers, common toilets, support centers and drinking water tanks are now on the side of the hut plus code. And every house in the program has a physical blue address board to see everything that shows its plus code.
“It saves me a lot of time,” says Suresh Devram Dharmavat, who used to close the grocery store on days when he visited wholesale markets. Today, he delivers many of the items he needs using his plus code.
To date, Joshi’s organization has helped 9,000 families in Pune, Thane and Kolhapur get digital addresses, and aims to cover 58 more huts. Eventually, he hopes residents will be able to add their codes to Aadhaar, India’s biometric ID program.
