Thousands of Indian farmers have gathered their belongings and dismantled tent cities on the outskirts of Delhi as they marched home after a year-long protest against the government’s agricultural policies.
In a strange retreat last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced through parliament and urged the repeal of three conflicting laws that would allow farmers to allow private companies to control the country’s agricultural sector.
Hundreds of farmers danced and celebrated the victory on Saturday morning, removing roadblocks and dismantling thousands of homes on major highways.
They lit firecrackers, hugged each other and handed out sweets while the loudspeakers played patriotic and revolutionary songs dedicated to the commotion.
In Singhu, at one of the protest sites, long lines of trucks and tractors filled the northbound highway to the original states of Haryana and Punjab.
Indian farmers have political weight because of their numbers: tens of thousands of them have camped since November 2020 to protest the laws, the biggest challenge the Modi government has faced since coming to power in 2014.
“It simply came to our notice then. But we are all happy that the government has accepted our demands and that we are returning to our homes, “one of the protesters, Sativinder Singh Singhu, told AFP.
“It’s a great day for farmers because we can safely return to our homes,” he said.
