Police are visiting Twitter offices to warn their country’s chief executive that social media giants have said the BJP spokesman’s message is “manipulated by the media”.
Police in the Indian capital have issued a statement on Twitter, asking for information to get a complaint about a tweet from a spokesman for the Hindu nationalist party in government that has been labeled as “manipulated media”.
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared some documents on Twitter last week, saying it was created by the main opposition Congress and highlighting the government’s failures to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Congress complained to Twitter that the document was fake, after which the U.S. company said some messages — including one from BJP spokesman Sambit Patra — were “manipulated by the media”.
New Delhi police said Monday night that they had received a complaint about the classification of Patra’s tweet he was investigating, adding that a group of officials had visited a Twitter office to report the inquiry.
“We needed to know who was the right person to warn us about this, as Twitter India MD’s responses have been very ambiguous,” the police statement said, referring to the company’s CEO.
Twitter says it applies the “manipulated media” label to messages that “deceptively alter or fabricate media (videos, audio, and images)”.
A major fact-finding body, AltNews, said it had examined the documents and said some had been created with a forged letter.
Twitter declined to comment on the matter.

Tensions between the Midi government and the social media giant have been going on for months, as Twitter earlier this year blocked the blocking of several accounts critical of New Delhi’s new agricultural laws following a request from authorities.
An Indian climate activist was arrested in February after allegedly tweeting from environmentalist Greta Thunberg to help create a guide to farmers ’protests against the law.
Last month the government promised Twitter and Facebook to remove ten posts about how Modik handled the coronavirus crisis.
Modi and BJP have been criticized for their slow response to a new wave of COVID-19 infections, which has led to a breakdown in India’s healthcare system, criticizing the Modi administration’s approach to eradicating the pandemic.
The BJP has lashed out at its army on social media, accusing state governments and others of repeatedly warning Modik of a second wave that he had ignored.
In India 26.75 million COVID-19 infections have been recorded, the second only in the US, with more than 300,000 dead, but experts warn that the actual toll could be much higher.
