The Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, plans to stop exporting Covid-19 jets by the end of the year, according to shipments to launch campaigns.
“We continue to increase manufacturing and prioritize India,” CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Tuesday. “We also hope to start sending it to Covax and other countries by the end of this year,” he added, referring to the multi-faceted global vaccine.
Poonawalla said the company and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were responding to a “lively debate” over the government’s decision to export vaccines earlier this year.
India blocked vaccine exports in March to fight a second devastating wave of coronavirus infections, leaving many other countries struggling to get doses. Serum is a lead contributor to Covax.
“Once again we want to say that we have never exported vaccines to the detriment of the Indian people and we are committed to doing everything we can to promote the country’s vaccines,” he said.
The evolution of vaccines in India has slowed as state governments have imposed local blockades in an effort to reduce the speed of the second wave, while clinics have complained about the lack of vaccines.
