An Indonesian submarine missing in the waters below Bali has been found on the seabed, the military said on Sunday, confirming that all 53 crew members were dead.
“The KRI Nanggala consisted of 402 parts – it was divided into three parts,” said Army Chief of Staff Yudo Margono.
Indonesian military leader Hadi Tjahjanto, meanwhile, told reporters that “53 personnel on board have passed.”
The submarine – one in five of the Indonesian fleet – disappeared on Wednesday during a live torpedo training session against the Indonesian island of Bali.
Authorities said they received signals from a site 800 meters deep in early Sunday and used an underwater rescue vehicle equipped by Singapore to obtain a visual confirmation.
Tjahjanto said more parts of the ship were found on Sunday, including an anchor and safety clothing worn by the crew.
On Saturday, the navy first said it had recovered underwater parts, including items inside the ship, but the location had not yet been confirmed.
