Israeli media reported that the cargo ship was previously owned by an Israeli magnate and was attacked on its way to the Basque Country.
According to Israeli and Lebanese media, a Liberian-flagged cargo ship sailing from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates has been attacked in the Indian Ocean.
The crew was not injured and the ship, most likely hit by a missile on Saturday, was not badly damaged and continued on the voyage, Israeli N12 Television said, citing unnamed sources at the Israeli defense establishment.
According to the N12, defense officials were checking to see if Iranian forces were behind the alleged attack.
The Lebanese pro-Iranian television channel Al Mayadeen reported the incident earlier. The channel said the ship was attacked with an unknown weapon.
Israeli media identified the container ship as CSAV Tyndall and said it was initially owned by Zodiac Maritime Ltd to manage the London-based international ship owned by London-based tycoon Eyal Ofer. The company, however, released a notice that it no longer owned or owns the CSAV Tyndall company.
Refinitiv Eikon’s vessel tracking data showed that the ship had finally docked at Jeddan and was now on the coast of Dubai.
A spokesman for the Basque government did not respond to a request for comment.
Saturday’s incident was the latest alleged attack in a water-sensitive region where Iran and Israel have denounced the blows of large enemies on each other’s ships.
