Italian judge Salvini the Court of Justice has thrown out a “kidnapping” case against

The decision led to a complaint against Salvini’s treatment of migrants and refugees last month.

An Italian judge in Sicily has dropped a lawsuit against right-wing leader Matteo Salvini in 2019 for refusing to allow migrants and refugees to leave the coast guard boat, saying he had not committed a crime.

The case was blamed for an incident in July 2019 when Salvini, the then Italian interior minister, blocked more than 100 people on board Gregoretti for six days while European allies waited for an agreement to locate them.

Some were saved by the kidnapping of Salvini refugees.

Catania prosecutors asked the judge not to send Salvini to trial because his decision did not violate international treaties and was not considered kidnapping.

The Catania case is similar to another investigation in the Sicilian capital of Palermo about what happened to Gregoretti a month ago about migrants and refugees who were on board in another ship.

However, in a contradictory decision, a Palermo judge last month ordered Salvini to stand trial on these allegations. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

“If there has been no kidnapping in Catania, then I don’t see why there should be a kidnapping in Palermo,” Salvini said after Friday’s verdict.

“It’s a nice day, not only for me and my family, but for all Italians who want controlled, regulated and positive immigration, and not the thousands of arrivals we can’t allow this post-COVID summer.”

The trial in Palermo will begin on September 15. A final conviction can save you from government offices.

Anti-immigration campaign

A large number of arrivals from the south of the island of Lampedusa have arrived in Italy again this month. More than 2,100 people arrived over the weekend alone.

During his 14 months as interior minister, Salvini prevented several ships from stopping in Italy in an effort to stop migrants and refugees entering the country, and the charities they operated effectively denounced the smuggling of people.

He has built a large part of his political profile in an anti-immigration campaign.

In the summer of 2019, when his party was leading the polls, Salvini removed the League from the Italian coalition government in a bid that failed to influence the election.

The League is part of the national unity government of Mario Draghi two months ago.

Although voters have lost some support since its failure in 2019, the party remains the most popular in Italy, according to most polls.
