The first league title won by Inter Milan in 2010 has ended Juventus’ nine-year tenure in Italian football.
Inter Milan have won their Serie A title for the first time in 11 years at the end of their nine-year tenure at Juventus in Italy.
Antonio Conte’s team scored the 19th “Scudetto” on Sunday when Atalanta drew 1-1 with their closest opponents in Sassuolo with four games left to give the Nerazzurri “13 points”.
Juventus started the record-breaking Conte – winning the first three titles from 2012 to 2020 – took on Inter in 2019 and lifted the trophy after finishing second last season.
“I’m shocked,” Conte said.
“We are breaking a dynasty. Even in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined that we would form that pitch in a team that has dominated Serie A for nine seasons. ”
Inter have secured second league trophies in Italy, ahead of rivals Milan’s 18-year-old city, but are far from Juventus’ 36th.
‘Italian champions’
The city of Milan became a cacophony of cars after the last whistle was confirmed that Inter were champions, with four games to go, and fans immediately began gathering to celebrate in the main square in front of the cathedral.
Thousands of Nerazzurri fans gathered in Piazza Duomo, waving flags and scarves, jumping and singing as they jumped and clapping, paying little attention to the coronavirus restrictions. Almost everyone wore costumes but many were thrown under the hail.
“We are, yes, we are. Italian champions. We can finally scream, after dreaming, after being hidden in the depths of our heart, after holding on like a precious dream that we didn’t want to waste, ”the long statement read on the Inter website.
Youth President Andrea Agnelli congratulated her Inter counterpart Steven Zhang on the success of the Chinese-owned club.
“Good luck Steven! Happy for you and proud to be your loyal opponent on the field and to be a friend off the field. We will be back, ”Agnelli wrote on Twitter.
The Lombardy team has not won Serie A since Jose Mourinho’s historic Champions League, when Serie A and the Coppa Italia tripled in 2010.
Their last trophy was the Coppa Italia in 2011 and they lost the Champions League in six seasons, before Luciano Spalletti returned to the main European club competition in 2018.
Conte is the 13th coach since Mourinho sat on the Nerazzurri bench and the club has changed twice in the last decade.
Billionaire Massimo Moratti, whose family controls the Italian oil refinery Saras Group, sold it to a consortium led by Indonesian business tycoon Erik Thohir in 2013, when Chinese electronics retailer Suning Holdings Group took a majority stake in 2016.
This is the first time an Italian-owned foreign team has won a league title.
