TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan began rescue operations for 20 people missing on Sunday after landslides caused by heavy rains hit central Atami, killing at least two people, the Kyodo news agency reported.
Kyodo said about 10 people were rescued on Saturday from flooding, landslides and cascading mud and houses that were half submerged 90 km (60 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga called on an emergency task force to deal with the crisis and called on people in the affected areas to be on alert.
The floods are reminiscent of the natural disasters that Japan suffered (including earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis). The capital Tokyo will host the summer Olympics, which began this month.
Kyoda said Suga and cabinet ministers would discuss the disaster at 11 a.m. (0200 GMT).
Kyizu said Shizuoka prefecture police, firefighters and about 700 members of the Japanese army resumed search and rescue work this morning.
In a place where regular rain continued, about 387 people have been evacuated since Sunday morning, the news agency reported.
