The South American football organization CONMEBOL on Wednesday rejected FIFA’s proposal to be held every two years.
“There is no reason, no benefit or justification for the change promoted by FIFA” to hold the World Cup every two years, instead of four, CONMEBOL said in a statement after meeting its council in Luque (Paraguay). “The ten countries that make up CONMEBOL confirm that they will not take part in the biennial World Cup,” he added.

FIFA will hold a summit in December with President Gianni Infantino to find a consensus on plans to hold a more frequent men’s tournament. However, the opposition has been so widespread from leagues, players and fan teams, where the chances of a World Cup happening every two years seem far off.
In its statement, CONMEBOL said the proposal to reduce the gap between the World Cups “turns its back on almost 100 years of world football tradition, ignoring the history of one of the most important sporting events on the planet.”
The current system, he added, has proven to be a “successful model” that “rewards effort, talent and planned work.”
The CONMEBOL council also decided on Wednesday that Colombia will host the 2022 Women’s America’s Cup.
