Russia had a four-month high in the number of new Covid-19 cases over the weekend, as the mayor of Moscow said the restrictions would be tightened by closing some businesses and limiting requests to take restaurants.
Confirmed coronavirus cases added 14,723 to data released Sunday, the largest increase since Feb. 13, according to the federal coronavirus task force. Cases have grown by 50 percent in the past week.
There were 357 deaths on Sunday, which is 126,430 since the pandemic began. More than 5 million Russians have contracted the disease.
Moscow authorities, in the worst-hit region, have tightened measures against the pandemic amid more and more cases, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said in a televised interview.
Moscow has seen a significant rise in coronavirus cases in several days – with 6,701 cases in the capital in the last 24 hours, the highest number since December 2020.
“We see how Covid-19 is progressing aggressively,” he told Rossiya-1. “Furthermore, we see that the severity of the disease is deteriorating, and there are many residents of Moscow who are in intensive care units and lung ventilators.”
Sobyanin said companies that don’t normally work on weekends should be closed for as long as they continue to pay employees next week.
Food parks in shopping malls and children’s playgrounds will also be closed starting Sunday, and restaurants and bars are expected to move their service from 11pm to 6am.
The vaccine against Russia has reached 18 million doses, as the country’s president Vladimir Putin has called for a higher jab rate.
People are “careful with all such procedures,” he said. “That’s common.”
