Appointed Prime Minister Michel Aoun is awaiting a response from President Michel Aoun in the face of a new cabinet proposal that could end the nine-month blockade.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has presented a new cabinet proposal to President Michel Aoun as far as the country can collapse its economy and end the nine-month blockade.
Veteran Sunni politician Hariri has submitted a number of proposals in recent months to Aoun, an ally of the Shiite group Hezbollah, but they have been unable to agree on a list.
“Now is the moment of truth,” Hariri said of the appointment of ministers since he was appointed with Aoun in October, following a meeting with reporters on Wednesday.
Aoun said in a statement that he would consider the proposed decision.
The proposal is for 24 technocratic minister specialists who are in line with a French initiative that envisaged a government capable of carrying out reforms that could unblock the foreign aid needed to rescue the nation.
“For me, this government can start rescuing the country and stop the collapse,” Hariri said at a news conference.
Previous proposals have also been for a technocratic group. It was not immediately clear how the new lineup changed or what would have happened if Aoun had ruled it out.
However, Wednesday’s proposal is seen as a last-ditch attempt to complete the Wire cabinet, in an effort it could have given up after a long-sponsored trip to Egypt.
Saudi-owned Al Hadath TV reported earlier that Cairo had asked not to stop, citing its sources.
Sources in Cairo have said that Egypt has promised economic and political support to a new government and that a delegation will soon travel to Beirut.
If he rejected the cabinet and left Hariri, he would have to look for another Sunni to represent the country.
According to a sectarian system of power distribution, the Lebanese president must be a Maronite Christian and the prime minister a Sunni Muslim. With less than a year to go before the parliamentary elections, few figures may be ready to move forward.

The Sunni leader said Aoun’s allies would gain veto power if a third of the cabinet seats went to them.
The bloc has deepened the financial crisis, saying the World Bank is one of the deepest depressions in modern history.
