Death when New South Wales recorded a record number of new infections and authorities reported more cases.

Australia has announced the death of its first coronavirus of the year as state authorities in New South Wales are battling the outbreak of a highly infectious variant of the Delta.

The 90-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19 and died within hours, officials said Sunday.

Hers is the first death from an infection in Australia this year. This happened when NSW registered 77 new cases of the virus.

State Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian told reporters that the country’s largest city in and around Sydney, which is already blocked, is expected to increase in number.

“I will be surprised if there are less than 100 of them this time tomorrow, with additional new cases,” he said.

There were 50 cases on Saturday, the previous record of 2021. The latest occurrence is 566 cases.

Among Sunday’s cases, 33 were people who passed through the community while they were infectious, and the possibility of extending a three-week detention for more than 5 million people in Sydney and the surrounding area is increasing.

“Seeing where we are and the blockade had to be lifted on Friday, everyone can say that it is very difficult at this stage,” Berejiklian said.

There are 52 cases in the hospital, or about one in 10 people infected in the current outbreak. Fifteen people are in intensive care, five are in need of ventilation.

Australia has fared much better than many other developed countries in keeping the COVID-19 number relatively low, having seen just over 31,000 cases since the pandemic began and 911 deaths.

The spread of the vaccine, however, has been slow due to supply constraints and a change in basic medical advice for AstraZeneca shots.

Vaccines are currently only available to people over the age of 40 and to groups at risk, due to health or a virus at work.

Among those hospitalized in Sydney, 11 are under the age of 35 and more than three-quarters of patients have not received any dose, health authorities said.
