A commercial lobster diver survives after being caught in the mouth of a humpback whale off the Cape Code coast.

Michael Packard, 56, said he was about 45 meters (14 meters) deep in the waters of Provincetown “suddenly I felt that horrible blow and everything was darkened.”

He thought he had been attacked by a shark that was common in the surrounding waters, but then he realized that he could not feel his teeth and that he was not hurt.

“Then I realized I was in the whale’s mouth … and he’s trying to swallow me,” Packard said.

“And I thought to myself that this is going to kill me.”

Packard said he was in the whale’s mouth for about 30 seconds on Friday, but continued to breathe because he still had a respiratory tract. Then the whale surfaced, shook its head and threw it.

He was rescued by a friend of his crew on the surface ship.

“I saw the light, and he started throwing his head back and forth and the next thing I knew I was outside [in the water]”Packard told the Cape Cod Times.

Jooke Robbins, director of whaling research at the Coastal Studies Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, said he had no reason to question the account.

Robbins said he had never heard of such an “accident”, but “it could be a bad time”.

“I didn’t think it was a hoax, because I knew people … I have every reason to believe that what they say is true,” he told AFP.

“It’s important for people to be fairly aware … And when they see the whale, keep a good distance. It’s really important to give the whale space,” Robbins added.
