Meet Troy Baker, the actor behind some of your favorite video game voices

We talked to Baker about his career, working from home during the coronavirus pandemic, what’s going on behind the scenes, and his perspective on the acting profession.

As a child, Baker wanted to be a musician. From time to time, his career intersects with his musical interests, but Baker appreciates that music-based stress is not the main source of income. “I love getting it done for leisure; I don’t have to do it professionally. It takes a lot of pressure off. I can sit at my piano or pick up one of my guitars and play it and it’s not tied to a dollar image, ”Baker said.

Early in his career, Baker worked at FUNimation and was nominated for numerous anime series Dragon Ball Z. “I cut my teeth, and I learned what my voice was capable of,” he said. “It was like my theater.” Returning to the roots of English dubbing in 2018, Baker played Baki’s lead role in the relaunch of Netflix, a popular anime that has become a Japanese manga.

Already tied to next-generation consoles, Baker plays Simon Krieger in Marvel Spider-Man: Miles Morales, one of the first games available PlayStation 5, and plays an entity called The Maw in Medium, one of the first games available Xbox Series X | S.

Talk about the logistical difficulties faced by the Bloober Group in its development Medium, Baker said: “The thing I love about this industry is that a bunch of crazy video games see something like Covid and they say,‘ Well, it’s just bad design. We’re used to stepping on mistakes, so how can we work around that? ‘The purpose of repetition, the goal of development, is to find obstacles and find ways to overcome them’.

He emphasized the need for close collaboration with gaming studios in the creative process, “that’s where you come in and do it together. It’s a collaboration. It’s not just about getting a nice voice on your own. It’s about working and collaborating with some very talented people. ”
