Moon’s remarks on Monday mark the fourth year of his presidency ahead of his first May 21 meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington.

The South Korean leader is expected to push the U.S. to seek a compromise with North Korea, although Biden has shown little interest in making North Korea a top priority.

“I think the rest of the year of my mandate is the last chance to move from an incomplete peace to an irreversible one,” Moon said in a statement on national television.

The White House recently completed a review of Washington’s North Korean policy and suggested that the Biden administration seek a middle ground between Donald Trump’s “big bargain” and Barack Obama’s “strategic patience” approaches as a way to thwart Pyongyang’s nuclear intentions.

In a speech on Monday, Moon said he was pleased to take the direction of the Biden administration’s North Korean policy, which ended after consultations with South Korea.

Moon said Biden’s policy is to achieve “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through a flexible, step-by-step and practical approach through diplomacy.”

The Biden administration has not provided details of its policy review. U.S. officials have said they are trying to consolidate steps toward growth, in which North Korea’s denuclearization steps include appropriate actions, including easing sanctions, rather than pushing Trump’s style toward an immediate comprehensive agreement through a leader. -leader summit.

Moon said that when he meets with Biden for his first meetings in Washington, he will try to strengthen the bilateral military alliance, push for North Korean political coordination and find ways to stop talks between Washington and Pyongyang and Seoul and Pyongyang.

“Time will not strain me or be patient for the rest of my tenure. However, if there is a chance to restart the peace clock and move the peace process forward on the Korean peninsula, I will do everything I can, ”Moon said.

The South Korean president once went between Pyongyang and Washington to facilitate nuclear diplomacy between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Trump.

Exchange and cooperation programs between Korea also flourished.

But Kim-Trump diplomacy eventually collapsed at a second summit in Vietnam in early 2019 due to US-led sanctions against North Korea. Pyongyang then disrupted communications with Seoul and halted all major joint cooperation programs.

Kim’s government has not made an official response to the Biden administration’s analysis of North Korean policy.

But last week his foreign ministry warned Washington that the situation was “very serious” when it criticized Biden’s North Korean nuclear program as a serious security threat in a speech to Congress.

In January, Kim said the fate of ties between North Korea and the U.S. will leave Washington with what it believes is an enemy policy against Pyongyang.

North Korea has long wanted the U.S. to lift sanctions and provide security guarantees.
