Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police erupted on Saturday in Jerusalem’s Old City as tens of thousands of Muslim worshipers prayed at the nearby Al-Aqsa mosque on Islam’s Holy Night Laylat al-Qadr.
Young Palestinians threw stones, lit fires and threw police barricades into the streets leading to the gated Old City gates, while Israeli security forces rode and spread whitewashed grenades and water cannons on riot gear.
At least 64 people have been injured, the Palestinian Red Moon said. Israeli police said at least one officer was injured.
The clashes took place the day after Israeli forces Al-Aqsa attacked and wounded more than 200 Palestinians.
In the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, tensions have escalated in the city, the occupied West Bank and Gaza over the ability of Palestinians to evacuate Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem.
Israeli border guards have in recent days used water, tear gas, rubber-covered bullets and grenades to disperse sit-ins in favor of homeless families in the Sheikh Jarrah district.
At least 205 Palestinians and 18 Israeli officers were injured in Friday’s clashes, prompting international condemnation and calls for calm.

Palestinian casualties rise to 64 in East Jerusalem
Doctors say at least 64 Palestinians have been injured in recent clashes with Israeli security forces, most of them by rubber bullets, stun grenades or beatings.
Among the injured are minors and a one-year-old child and 11 people were taken to hospital, the Palestinian Red Moon said.
Israeli police said at least one officer was injured.
They mark tens of thousands in the Laylat al-Qadr Al-Aqsa mosque
Some 90,000 people gathered for the Laylat al-Qadr prayers at night in Al-Aqsa, the third holiest site in Islam.
Laylat al-Qadr or “Night of Fate” are the most sacred prayers.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 53 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police in East Jerusalem on Saturday night.
Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, who reported from the Damascus Gate in East Jerusalem, said there had been a “repeated cycle of fighting and calm” in the area between Palestinian protesters throwing plastic bottles and Israeli security forces throwing stunning grenades and a foul odor of water.

Police violently disperse Sheikh Jarrah’s protest
Mohammed el-Kurd, a Palestinian living in Sheikh Jarrah, has shared images made by Israeli police of Palestinian protesters violently dispersing a seat in the district.
In a video, a group of police are seen destroying tents and moving people away from the protest site. In another clip an officer showed a Palestinian woman being violently dragged along the road.

The meeting of the Arab League is unlikely to change on the ground: Analyst
The emergency Arab League meeting scheduled for Monday is unlikely to bring about a change in Israel’s behavior unless Arab states, especially those that have normalized relations with Israel, decide to take important measures, said Marwan Bishara Al Jazeera’s chief political analyst.
“If the Arab League does not take a serious initiative, among other things, to warn some of these states that normalize relations with Israel, unless some of these Arab countries use diplomatic or other forces with Israel, I think we will only see more statements,” Bishara said.
“Statements that are very loud in accusations and condemnations, but are very useful or very short in terms of forcing Israel or its allies, not just the United States, to act to stop Palestinian repression in Jerusalem.”

Israeli police used rubber bullets and water to disperse protesters in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah district, an Al Jazeera reporter said.
Hundreds of protesters gathered today around Othman Ben Afan Street, where families threatened with house evictions live, the reporter added.

Turkey’s Erdogan has condemned the storm at the Al-Aqsa mosque
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the crackdown on Israeli police in the Al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem on Friday.
“We sadly condemn the horrific attacks by Israel against our first qibla #AlAqsaMosque, which are unfortunately being carried out every Ramadan,” Erdogan wrote on Twitter.

Senator Sanders: The U.S. needs to speak out against the Jerusalem evictions
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders in a tweet on Saturday called on the U.S. government to make clear its opposition to the eviction of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem.

The Arab-Israeli NGO calls for an end to attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque
An Arab-Israeli NGO has called on Israeli senior officials to stop “violent attacks” on security forces at the Al-Aqsa mosque and to stop using excessive force against Palestinian worshipers and medical staff.
In a letter to Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit and Israeli Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai, lawyer Wesam Sharaf Adalah, the Israeli Arab Minority Rights Center, said the attacks endangered the lives of worshipers and violated their right to freedom of worship.
