Nepalese president dissolves parliament in new elections in November Election news

The presidency says the caretaker prime minister or opposition leader did not show a majority to form a new government.

Nepal has plunged into a new political turmoil as President Bidya Devi Bhandari dissolved parliament and the COVID-19 rally, which held general elections in November, was deteriorating.

An unexpected announcement on Saturday said in a presidential statement that interim Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and non-opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba could not show a majority to form a new government on Friday set by Bhandari.

“The President has dissolved the House of Representatives and ordered the first phase of the general election on November 12 and the second phase on November 19,” the president said after midnight.

He said the decision was taken on the recommendation of the cabinet headed by interim Prime Minister Oli, and the dissolution of parliament in December 2020 sparked protests last week and the Supreme Court was unconstitutional in February.

Political parties did not immediately comment on the latest move.

Nepal is battling a second deadly wave of the pandemic and reports an average of 8,207 new infections every day.
