New attempt to decriminalize marijuana in US House – Reuters report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Rep. Nancy Mace was developing legislation to decriminalize marijuana and impose a tax on the sale of cannabis with the goal of introducing it to the U.S. House of Representatives this month, according to media reports.
Marijuana Moment reported that the bill seeks to mark a commitment measure that will not be as broad as the broader bills being sought by others in Congress.
Mace’s aides were not immediately available for comment, and Reuters has not confirmed whether it is close to the content of a potential invoice it was working on or whether it is close to submitting that invoice.
Eighteen U.S. states, most recently in June Connecticut, as well as the District of Columbia, have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. The use of marijuana, which is still prohibited by federal law, has been approved in 36 states and the District of Columbia.
On Friday, Marijuana Moment reported that it was rolling out a draft of the “State Reform Act,” which was preparing the final version within a week.
Cannabis stocks advanced on Monday, following reports of legislation.
Mace is the first MP. According to Marijuana Moment, his bill would make the inter-state regulation of marijuana, which is a agency of the Treasury Department, subject to the Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration would also have a limited role in regulating products, according to the report.
Recreational cannabis use would be restricted to those over the age of 21, and similar to federal controls on alcohol, there would be restrictions on marijuana advertising.
There are a few weeks left in the legislature in this highly fragmented session of Congress and it was not clear how much the legislators could do when the 2022 election campaign begins early next year.
