The two men on a motorcycle attacked the home of Niger National Assembly President Seini Oumarou.
A machine gun attack by Nigerian National Assembly President Seini Oumarou has killed one of his guards and a second seriously injured by authorities.
The attack, which took place from Friday to Saturday night, was carried out by two men on a motorbike, Osseini Salatou Oumarou’s adviser told reporters on Saturday.
“The guards were machine-gunned (placed in front of his house) and one of them was killed,” and the other was seriously injured, he added.
The Nigerian Interior Ministry confirmed the release in a statement on Saturday evening, adding that the two attackers had successfully tried a 4 × 4 vehicle parked in front of the building before leaving the scene.
Officials added that they have opened an investigation into the attack.
Oumarou leads the National Movement for the Development Association, which was in power from 1999 to 2010.
Oumarou, now 70, finished third in the first round of the December 2020 presidential election before throwing support behind the last winner, Mohamed Bazoum.
In the violence that erupted after Bazoum’s election in February, protesters attacked Oumarou’s house, killing one of his bodyguards.
Niger is located on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Security is a growing concern after ISIL and al-Qaeda have linked neighboring armed groups in Nigeria, Mali and Libya.
