Firefighters said eight people were seriously injured in the collapse in Gwangju City.
At least nine people have been killed and eight seriously injured in South Korea when a five-story building in South Korea – which was about to be demolished – suddenly collapsed into a bus, local fire department officials said.
The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon when the bus stopped on a street near the demolition site in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers southwest of the capital Seoul, officials at the Gwangju Fire and Safety Headquarters said.
Dramatic television films showed the bus carrying 17 people in the boat, buried in the rubble and drowned by a huge dust cloud when the structure gave way.
Yang Ik-je, who ran from a construction site across the road, said he ran outside, feeling the loud noises that made him feel like he was “shaking the ground.”
“I couldn’t see the road clearly, as if it was surrounded by a thick fog,” Yonhap told the news agency. “I checked the CCTV to find out that the building had collapsed on a bus.”
The cause of the collapse was unclear, and police investigations are underway, officials said.
All workers at the demolition site were evacuated before they fell.
South Korea is taking steps to improve its security record in infrastructure after numerous disasters.
A major department store crash killed more than 500 people in 1995, making it the worst peace disaster in the country. Last year a bridge killed 49 people.
