Ashes ‘online’, Root wants England to repeat Buttler’s fight

England can’t feel sorry for themselves after losing their second Ashes Test against Australia and going 2-0 in a five-game series, captain Joe Root said on Monday.

With four days to go in the opening of the Brisbane series, England continued their second defeat in Adelaide, despite strong resistance from Jos Buttler with a bat.

“The ashes are at stake here, if that’s not the motivation, I don’t know what it is,” Root said in the day-night test after his team’s 275 defeat.

26 of Buttler’s 207 runs delayed the Australian victory load a bit, and Root said that should be the case for the remaining matches in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart.

“Ultimately, that’s the attitude and mindset that we need to take advantage of over the next five days,” Root said.

“I’m very proud of the way the guys have fought today, the attitude and the spirit, and that’s how we have to play a whole test match.

“I thought Jose’s entries were remarkable on that pitch. He needed to gain a lot more confidence from this.”

Asked if he had chosen the wrong team for Adelaide, Root said his bowlers had to throw more balls with the pink ball.

“We have to be braver and get the ball up there,” he said.

“The most disappointing thing for me is the number of balls we keep in bowling. We don’t think Australia is much better than us in these conditions. We are better than what we have played.”

Belief was essential to trying to get back into the series, he said.

“We have to believe, we have to keep learning, we have to learn faster. We can’t make the same mistake we made so far. We have to have the same attitude as today,” Root added.

“If we do that, I’m sure we have something to do, but we can’t make mistakes. We need great cooperation and contributions.”

Root was very disappointed with himself on Sunday night for taking the last ball to Mitchell Starc after he hit the cross a few minutes earlier.

He was also injured in the morning training in the same area.

“It was dark last night. It was a hard day yesterday. I was very cross-legged with myself. I had to keep up today and put on pads and set an example,” he said.
