Rights groups say Israel should give permission for Khalida Jarrar to attend the funeral of her 31-year-old daughter Suha, who was found dead at her home in Ramallah.

Palestinian activists and rights groups have called on the Israeli authorities to release Palestinian lawmaker Khalida Jarrar, who is serving a prison sentence, so she can attend her daughter’s funeral.

Israeli prison services on Monday denied a request for political prisoner Jarrar to attend the funeral, according to Palestinian activists and Israeli media.

Suha Jarrar, 31, was found dead on Sunday afternoon in an occupied house in the West Bank’s Ramallah, Palestinian media reported. According to reports, Jarrar died of a heart attack.

The young Jarrar was working as a legal investigator and official advocate in Ramallah, Al-Haq, a Palestinian human rights organization. Some of his most notable works focused on the environmental effects of the Israeli occupation.

A 2019 report argued that discriminatory Israeli policies prevent Palestinians in the occupied West Bank from being able to adapt to climate change.

In an obituary, Al-Haq said Suha was “an ardent defender of the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, freedom and dignity.”

Al-Haq said he had sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations asking him to immediately release Jarrar from Israeli prisons to say goodbye to his daughter “immediately and unconditionally.”

Palestinian activists also spread an online demand for release. Others organized demonstrations in support of the West Bank and Gaza calls.

“Khalida has been arrested again and again [Jarrar] violating her rights, the Israeli authorities must at least allow her daughter to say goodbye, ”Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestinian director of Human Rights Watch, wrote in an obituary for Suha.
