People in Sydney, Australia’s largest city, have been ordered not to leave the metropolis as authorities collect several new cases of coronavirus of the Delta variant. This development has made it possible to raise the alert level in nearby New Zealand from an Australian tourist after exposure.

In New South Wales (NSW), Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced tougher restrictions – affecting around five million people living and working in the city – on Wednesday.

“It’s clear that the situation is evolving,” Berejiklian said at a news conference.

The new rules went into effect at 4pm (06:00 GMT) in Sydney and will remain in force for a week.

“In light of what has happened, the NSW government will take steps today to limit the spread of what is a highly contagious variant of COVID.”

Brad Hazzard, NSW’s health minister, described the city as “a very real and current risk” as the cluster, which was first identified on Bondi Beach, reached 21 cases on Wednesday morning with eight confirmed.

Most of the newly confirmed cases were located in a single event, and a crowded rally was held on Tuesday.

“It’s a new and more dangerous version of the virus,” Hazzard said at a news conference.

Berejiklian said home visitors have a five-person limit, including new restrictions on children.

Wearing a mask that was already recovered on Friday will be extended to people who need to wear masks at all indoor and outdoor events. The measures also include restrictions on access to public transportation and gym classes, but singing in indoor venues, as well as in places of worship, will not be allowed.

Authorities are also urging people to approach the tests.

“If we comply with the health orders today, we will have a good chance of overcoming this outbreak,” Berejiklian told reporters.

As of Wednesday, Australia had more than 30,300 cases and 910 deaths.

The country has been one of the most successful pandemics in the world, allowing the reopening of the border to New Zealand.

But new cases are being tested travel bubble among neighbors.

On Wednesday, New Zealand raised a pandemic alert in Wellington to the second level, which is one level short of the blockade.

Earlier, an Australian tourist who visited the capital over the weekend gave a positive COVID when they returned to Sydney.

“All that is needed is preventive measures that will continue as long as we drag and test,” New Zealand COVID response minister Chris Hipkins said.

Due to the high level of alert, offices, schools and businesses are still allowed to open, but people have to comply with social exclusion rules.

Meetings of more than 100 people are prohibited, including weddings and other parties.

New Zealand has a population of five million, with a total of 2,720 cases and 26 deaths. The country has recovered 98.2 percent.

In Australia itself, Queensland and Victoria have both closed their borders to people in many parts of Sydney as a result of new cases.
