To my fantasy, it’s a summer evening, 70 degrees south of California. I head out into the garden to pull out the inherited tomatoes for the rigatoni that night, sprinkle a lot of basil leaves on top, and while I’m at it – dahlias to go to the handmade vase sitting in the meadow in the middle of the table.
Certainly a part of my dream lies in the sheer joy of gathering friends, after a year without that simple pleasure. But all of this is effortlessly rooted in the idea of finding joy in the creative process and putting aside ideas about “impressing my guests”.
I hope to feel this feeling of ease and joy when I always gather people at home, even if it is sometimes more successful than others. That’s why it immediately attracted me Of Valerie Rice new cookbook, Lush Life: Garden Food and Drink, the next week. Rice lives in Santa Barbara, and her extensive gardens, henhouse, and stunning Mediterranean-style house are not just live-action films from a Nancy Meyers film, they are the setting for the menus she experiences throughout her book. Every recipe feels like a celebration, but it’s easy enough to make any day of the week, proving that a beautiful summer night can cause enough celebration on its own. I got a preview of the book, and it was nice for Rice to share it with two of my favorite recipes from the summer before it was released with us! It’s Valerie Rice’s motto, and while the seasonal recipes in her book are perfect for family meals all year round, I’m especially attracted to summer recipes for entertaining, along with cocktail recipes and wine tips.
His book rekindled my desire plant an edible garden at home – the idea you might remember was in the process last year, but when we found and bought a beach house last summer we canceled it and all our creative efforts were diverted to it. However, Valerie’s gardening tips have challenged me to at least get started – maybe this year I won’t get to know the full view of raised beds, but at least I’ll get it. plant some large pots of herbs to add seasonality and freshness to our meals throughout the summer.
