The 540km (335-mile) western border crossing between Turkey and Iran is protected by a concrete wall, a threaded wall of which stretches 140km (87 miles).
But that does nothing to help thousands of young people fleeing Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran each year in search of a better life to leave behind conflict, violence and despair.
According to the Directorate General for Migration Management of the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, 53,176 migrants have been detained so far this year up to 16 June. The number is half of the 122,302 registered last year and a sharp drop from the 454,662 migrants who stopped in 2019.
In the last 10 years, Turkey has become one of the most important countries for migrants on their way to Europe.
Most migrants flee their countries for similar reasons.
For Afghans and Pakistanis, war and violence are forcing them out of their homeland.
For the Iranians, they took the road to Turkey – the main gateway to Europe – dreaming of better economic opportunities and fleeing the oppressive government of Tehran.
But the trajectory is risky and high-risk, and many are growing on the list of victims of human trafficking in the region.
