Rescue workers found the remains alive under the rubble on Sunday, when the bombing of the besieged Gaza Strip by Israel entered its seventh consecutive day.

A 150-hour-long rainstorm swept across the territory on Sunday night, a Palestinian security source said it was the “most intense” blast since the second intifada or uprising began in 2000.

Emergency crews rushed from the vast piles of burning rubbish and dumped the bodies that had been dumped in the buildings, crying in fear and grief.

Nearly half of the rockets were aimed at the al-Wehda Gaza City district, where homes, infrastructure and roads were destroyed or partially damaged.

The health ministry has confirmed that 26 people were killed overnight – including Dr. Ayman Abu al-Ouf, head of internal medicine at Shifa hospital – after being bombed in Israeli homes. Five children were found alive under the rubble.

“We still hear people screaming under the rubble,” said Medhat Hamdan, who came from Khan Younis to Gaza City and worked uninterruptedly for 11 hours to save the lives of civil defense workers.

“For me, working in this field has scared me. It doesn’t surprise me with what I see, but it can’t leave us excited when we reach and remove the children’s bodies, ”Hamdan said, adding that he has pulled three dead children out from under the rubble.

Translation: The rescue team is still searching for missing people in the massacre that took place on al-Wehda Street in Gaza City.

“Our entire neighborhood – from Tel Shubeir to the Palmera junction – was bombed,” said Ramzi Eshuntza, who was at home saying 40 consecutive airstrikes in a matter of minutes.

“We got out of the house and saw the destruction of most of the buildings around us, including my brother’s house. His wife and four children were killed while they were asleep, ”Eshuntza said.

“My brother’s wife came out with her arms wrapped around her sons,” he added. “There were no F-16 missiles; those were bombs from F-35 war planes. “

‘They are children’

A rescue worker reported that he was trying to rescue people from under the rubble.

“We heard the cries of a young girl. We also heard the ringing of the cell phone. We followed the sound and then, using a bulldozer and other light devices, we reached the girl who was alive, ”she said.

“A woman and her children – two boys and two girls – are dead. Were these kids firing rockets? Isn’t it enough that they were denied Eid’s joy? These are kids! The oldest was in the fourth grade. ‘

Miriam Mueller, ICRC Gaza said there had been a “tremendous” increase in violence in recent days.

“Our teams have rarely moved. Scaling is really necessary so that we can assess the humanitarian situation on the ground and provide the support we need, ”Mueller said.

“I’ve only been here a couple of days … and it’s been disappointing to see how the situation is developing.”

Another neighbor, Khalil al-Kolak, said two of his family’s buildings were destroyed.

“We woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of the bombing,” he said.

“Only two of our family are alive,” he continued. “The rest – 14 members including women, children and men – have disappeared. There are still six under the rubble. “

“Criminal Punishment”

Raji al-Sourani, the head of the Palestinian human rights center, told Al Jazeera that Israel is deliberately fighting civilians.

“What happened in Al-Wehda is clear evidence that Israel is committing crimes against humanity and is targeting civilians,” he said.

“The most developed and powerful military in the region is attacking residential buildings, banks, journalists and families. It is clear that this criminal army cannot overcome resistance and instead 80% of its targets are civilians. “

Al-Sourani said the crimes are being documented and will be presented in international courts.

Israeli Brigadier General Hidai Zilberman, an army spokesman, told Israeli army radio on Sunday that the military was targeting the home of Yehiyeh Sinwar, the oldest Hamas leader in the territory.

Since the outbreak of violence on Monday, more than 170 Palestinians have been killed on the Gaza Strip, including 41 children. More than 1,000 others were injured. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces have killed at least 13 Palestinians.

“Our children, the children, are being called without warning,” said a devastated Mohammed al-Hadidi who lost most of his family on strike and also injured a five-month-old baby in the blast.

On the same day, Israeli forces he threw down a tall building it houses the offices of media organizations, including Al Jazeera’s office.

As the violence escalates, the humanitarian situation is steadily worsening, with about 17,000 Palestinians fleeing their homes for fear of a ground attack near the Israeli fence east of the Gaza Strip.

“Schools, mosques and other places are taking refuge in a global COVID-19 pandemic while having limited access to water, food, hygiene and health services,” said UN human rights officer Lynn Hastings.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was “terrified” by the civilian deaths in Gaza and was “very upset” by Israel’s strike in the tower’s news offices.

Guterres “reminds all parties that discriminating against civil and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs,” his spokesman said.

The UN Security Council is meeting on Sunday to discuss the bloodiest conflict between Israel and the Palestinians since 2014.

On Saturday, the Palestinians marked the Nakba – the “catastrophe” that displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the 1947-1948 creation of Israel.
