At least nine people have been killed and 45 others injured in a passenger train crash in the eastern state of Jalpaiguri.

Rescuers found four bodies last night while clearing 12 wrecked trains on a train leaving the West Bengal state of India, bringing the death toll to nine, a railway official said.

At least 45 people were injured in Thursday’s crash when the car went off the rails and three were overturned, said Rajiv Jain Railway Ministry spokesman.

Rescue work was being completed and the track was being cleared to restore train services in the region, Jain said on Friday.

Images taken after the accident showed passengers stuck in twisted metal and debris while trying to rescue rescuers.

The train was traveling to Guamhata, Assam State, from Bikaner, a city in Rajasthan State, when the accident occurred in the Jalpaiguri district.

All the injured were being treated at a hospital, Chief Police Debarshi Dutta said.

Guneet Kaur, a senior railway official, said they were investigating the cause of the accident. The government said it would provide financial compensation to the families of the dead and all the injured.

Accidents are common in India’s massive but aging railway network.

Safety regulations have been a constant concern in the state system, with 9,000 passenger trains operating and transporting about 23 million passengers daily.
