BERLIN (Reuters) – Heavy rains and single-generation floods on Wednesday night caused the collapse of six homes in western Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and left several people missing and many left on rooftops, police said on Thursday.
About 30 people were missing and about 25 other homes were in danger of collapsing in the Schuld bei Adenau district, in the mountainous Eiffel region, SWR TV said earlier, citing police.
“We now have a clear number of people who need to be rescued from the rooftops,” a Koblenz police spokesman told Reuters.
“There are a lot of places where firefighters and rescue workers have been deployed. We still don’t have a very specific picture because rescue measures are being followed,” the spokesman added.
Two firefighters drowned and the army was deployed to help deployed residents on Wednesday as a slow low-pressure weather system caused flooding for a generation.
Rail, road and river transport was disrupted due to interruptions in the Rhine.
Heavy rainstorms are expected in southwest Germany on Thursday, with continuous rain until Friday evening, the German Weather Service reported in its morning bulletin.
