SEOUL (Reuters) -Since Monday, South Korea will tighten its coronavirus curves to the highest possible level in Seoul and neighboring regions for the first time, as the alarm opens with new COVID-19 cases setting the second international record of the second day in a row.

South Korea, which has so far outperformed industrialized countries in the number of cases and deaths, reported 1,316 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight on Thursday, up from a previous record of 1,275 on Wednesday.

Among the cases acquired on the spot, 78% were concentrated in a large area of ​​Seoul, and the detection rate of the highly transmissible Delta variant increased almost three times a week, Health Minister Kwon Deok-cheol said in a statement on Friday.

Kwon did not provide a number of cases related to the Delta variant.

President Moon Jae-in will convene a meeting on Monday with senior officials in the area around Seoul to discuss the measures, presidential spokesman Park Kyung-mee told reporters.
