The Syrian army says several Israeli missiles hit a container area in the port of Latakia and some of them set fire to it.
The Syrian army says Israeli fighter jets fired missiles at the Syrian port of Latakia, damaging the containers but causing no casualties.
The attack took place at 1:23 a.m. Tuesday (11:23 p.m. GMT Monday), a military source told the SANA news agency.
The official said several missiles hit the area of the port’s containers, and some of them were set on fire.
“Our air defense repulsed the Israeli attack in Latakia,” he said.
It was a rare attack on the port of Latakia, a vital facility that brings many Syrian imports to a war-torn country.
Syrian state television reported that five explosions had been heard in the port and that a large fire had broken out in the area of the containers and fire trucks had gone to the port.
He said the fire had been extinguished.
There was no opinion from the Israeli army.
Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets within government-controlled Syria, but rarely supports or discusses such operations.
Past strikes have targeted the main airport in the capital, Damascus.
Israel has admitted, however, that it is targeting the bases of Iran’s allied militias, such as the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which has deployed fighters in Syria. He says he is attacking weapons shipments aimed at militias.
Hezbollah is fighting for the strength of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the civil war of the decade.
Israel says Iran’s presence on its northern border is a red line, and it justifies attacks on facilities and weapons inside Syria.
On November 24, Israeli missile attacks killed five people in western Homs province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
In two Israeli attacks in October, five pro-Iranian militants were killed near the Syrian capital Damascus, and nine pro-government fighters were killed near a T4 air base in eastern Syrian-central Palmyra, a UK-based rights group said.
