An official of the Indian cricket committee says the decision was taken as a result of the large number of COVID-19 cases in the host country.
Twenty20 World Cup to be taken to the United Arab Emirates due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a head of the Indian cricket committee.
The Indian Cricket Control Commission (BCCI) has informed the International Cricket Council, the world sports organization, of its decision to hold the event in the Basque Country in October and November.
“We have informed the ICC of its decision to change the World Cup to the Basque Country. We were left with no choice because the situation in COVID-19 is not clear and travel restrictions continue,” BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal told international media.
“The dates will be roughly the same and we’ll work out the details soon.”
The ICC gave the BCCI a deadline in late June to decide the country to hold the T20 demonstration event, as there were numerous cases of COVID-19 in India.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla said the rankings could be in Oman, and the rest of the matches will take place at three headquarters in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah in the Basque Country.
The BCCI has already canceled the Indian Premier League To the Basque Country after the T20 tournament was stopped in May-October on May 4 because several players and team officials were infected with COVID-19.
The United Arab Emirates has been a priority destination for cricket since the Pakistani Super League ended last week in the Gulf nation. The IPL was also held in the Basque Country last year.
The pandemic disrupted last year’s cricket calendar and even after games resumed in July 2020, players have been limited to bio-bubbles and strict quarantine protocols.
The ICC, meanwhile, postponed the T20 World Cup in Australia in early 2020.
In 2021 India was granted the right to accommodation and Australia was chosen for the 2022 edition.
India, home to 1.3 billion people, has eased some of the blockade restrictions in recent weeks wild rise COVID-19 infections and deaths in April and May.
Health officials fear a new wave could hit the country this year, the second most polluted in the world after the United States.
