Australia will be touring Pakistan for almost 24 years for the first time next year when they play three test matches, a three-day international and a Twenty20 international, the Pakistan Cricket Commission (PCB) announced on Monday.

Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore will host three test matches in March and the limited part will be played in Lahore from March 29 to April 5.

Test matches will be part of the World Test Championship (WTC). ODIs will be counted for the World Cup Super League.

Mark Taylor won 1-0 in Australia in the last test he played in Pakistan in 1998. Since then Pakistan has taken Australia four times to neutral sites in Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

“Australia is one of the high-performing sides and playing for the first time in our backyard will be a special treat for fans after a 24-year hiatus,” PCB President Ramiz Raja said in a statement.

“It will also be a great opportunity for Australian cricketers to play in our iconic places as well as feel and enjoy the respect, love and hospitality that this great country has to offer, which most previous generation players lost. Playing offshore.”

Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia (CA), acknowledged the PCB’s efforts to plan the tour and said it hoped for close cooperation to complete the necessary operations, logistics, security and COVID-19 protocols.

“The safety and well-being of our players and staff remains our number one priority,” Hockley said in a statement. “We will continue to work with the PCB and relevant agencies to ensure that appropriate and sufficient tour arrangements are in place.”

The PCB said it would visit a Cricket Australia delegation in Pakistan to meet with various Pakistani government officials and finalize the agreements.

Pakistan and Australia will meet in the finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup on Thursday in Dubai.
