Another of the biggest fights of the summer has fallen, Errol Spence Jr. They have been forced to defend their WBC and IBF weight welterweight title against the legendary Manny Pacquiao. Spence had a tear in his retina that forced him to get out of the fight.

Pacquiao will face WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas in the main payout ceremony on August 21st.

“I’m very disappointed because I won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao.” Spence said in a press release. “I was very excited about the fight. Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and told me I needed surgery ASAP and that there was no way to fight my eye in that condition.”

Ugas was already planning to face Fabian Maidana in the underlying ticket fight tonight. He rose to become a “super champion” due to Pacquiao’s inactivity after Pacquiao won his belt in July 2019 with Keith Thurmani.

Pacquiao hasn’t fought since Thurman’s fight, which was to return to the world title scene when it seemed that his time as Pacquiao’s elite fighter was over.

Spence, 31, is undefeated and is one of the elite wrestlers in the pound-for-pound sport. He has had welterweight gold since May 2017 and was able to fight Pacquiao against one of the best fighters in his modern trading era.

“First of all, I urge everyone to pray for a full recovery for Errol Spence Jr.,” Pacquiao said. “Thank God his physical examination found the eye condition before he suffered further damage.”
