Prabhakar Raghavan is not the CEO of Google. He Just Runs the Place

Definitely.

We use duplex to call businesses.

So do you have robots making these calls and receiving information from people? I hope the other end reveals that it is a robot.

“This is a Google Duplex robot. We are curious whether you have changed the hours or not ”. There is a bit of a conversation. “What happens on Saturdays?” We caught that, and we did millions of updates.

Have you returned to the office?

I have, but not regularly. We have these open pods that we put in the grass. I’ve been to a couple of them. I believe that society will have to take steps to build trust gradually. It will adapt, especially when infections suddenly rise in some parts of the world or new variants are found. But, I think, we will move forward with time.

Some think that the whole culture of pampering staff with coffee and campus massages and dry cleaning will never come back. Is all this over?

I wouldn’t call it a culture of employee mime. I think we want our campuses to be really lively centers where staff want to come back. So I hope we don’t give up.

How much relationship do you have with Larry Page now?

He does the surface, usually at management meetings. Apart from that, there is a very rare email in which he participates and makes very specific notes about the features of the product. When he says something, he is very knowledgeable. And you are like, “Oh, God, what did he say? I have to think very carefully! ”

Tell me about Sundar Pichai, your relationship with your boss. You have a similar origin when you went to the same institute in India. How do you work together?

I don’t know if having a similar origin necessarily helps. We have similarities, and our differences. I have more technical pedigree, he has a genealogical business than him. That way, I can sometimes get caught up in the details of the model. It’s very deliberate, it always stages things from so many different angles. I try to be as thoughtful as he is.

Prior to becoming CEO of Alphabet, he was CEO of Google. I know you’re not in charge of YouTube or Google Cloud, but you’re the CEO of Google. Is not it?

I wouldn’t say that.

Well, you have search, ads, trade, maps. That was all Google did.

I think the way to interpret that is that Google has become so much more than before.

Back in your career you worked at IBM. Although IBM dominated in the 80s, it didn’t have the impact that big tech companies have now. Have you ever thought that technology companies would have such valuations and power over people?

You put it as a power over the people. I think a lot more in terms of power. I actually wake up every day responsibility to the people.

As you know, there is much more skepticism now. When a company like Google provides technological advancement, people question it.

This curiosity, as well as the study, is understandable. It’s up to us to convey the magic and wonder of what we do so that people don’t have to worry about things they don’t understand. Increasing understanding is for the benefit of all. What we’re doing is pretty horrible. It’s up to us to help educate people on how amazing it is.
