If you’ve ever done it has scanned a digital card to access your phone directly airport security, you might think that doing the same thing with a driver’s license would make life a little easier. Starting in iOS 15 in the fall, Apple will only enable this, letting you save your state ID your credit cards, loyalty programs, pass cards, as well as keys to Apple and Wallet doors and cars. That way, the company won’t just incorporate convenience; it may be the point at which more states, the U.S. government, and even Android will force digital driving licenses to become normal.
Apple itself is not launching universal digital identification scheme; many others have embarked on it technically and geopolitically seriously efforts To create a private and secure ID for all IDs. And digital driving licenses are not entirely new. Like states Oklahoma, Delaware, and Arizona they have recently worked with a company called IDEMIA to develop an assistant application for the approval of digital infrastructure and driving licenses. It is still very early. Any state that authorizes a digital driver’s license requires you to carry a physical version, and some mobile licenses may not be issued outside the state that issued them. That’s partly because the federal government is part of the REAL ID Act because it’s in the process of setting new design requirements to make driving licenses more difficult or manipulable. Apple didn’t talk to him directly about the issue, but it will surely create the ability to use Wallet IDs to fly outside the state.
In April, the TSA and the Office of Strategy and Policy of the Department of Security open Public comment period for ID security standards and platforms. Apple has a direct relationship with the TSA to allow wallet-based driving licenses to be used at the airport.
“TSA is working to enable security checks at the airport in the first place so you can use your digital ID,” Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Wallet and Apple Pay, said when launching iOS 15 last week. “When you present your ID, you will know what specific information is required and how it is presented in a secure manner.”
Also the International Organization for Standardization digital driving license standard, but it’s unclear whether Apple will join. The standard is still “in development” and could evolve because digital IDs are so new.
Overall, however, advocates say digital IDs will be more secure and private than physical ones. Mobile driving licenses can be blocked with biometric authentication – in the case of FaceID or TouchID Apple. If someone steals your physical driver’s license, they may flash a bouncer or steal your personal information from you. But a secure digital driver’s license, like the Apple Wallet, wouldn’t be accessible to anyone with no finger or face available.
Digital driver’s license efforts have begun slowly in the U.S. so far. In Louisiana, for example, about 670,000 people have been using the state’s three-year digital ID system since May, which is about 14 percent of the population. With Apple’s support for Wallet driver’s licenses, the choice of specific IDs is much more accurate. But there are still many open questions about how the company will perform the function and when your state will soon be involved.
Apple has declined to comment on what status it is cooperating with and what license Wallet will accept when launching the feature. The company does not want to comment on whether it is working to implement digital driver licenses with states that no longer offer them independently.
