He said citizens, rescuers and police were transporting dead and injured passengers to nearby hospitals.

It was not immediately known what caused the derailment and the subsequent collision.

Train accidents are common in Pakistan, with successive governments paying little attention to improving poorly maintained signal systems and aging pathways.
