The Fire HD 10 is not best tablet you will never use it. Not even close. But it’s cheap, decently powerful, and good enough for many of us.
Amazon’s update to the 2021 10-inch Fire HD 10 is a mirror of what we saw last year 8-inch model. There are currently two variants, one with 3 gigabytes of RAM and the “Plus” model with 4 GB. He has also added something called Amazon Productivity rangeThe Fire Fire consists of 10 tablets (3 GB RAM model), a Bluetooth keyboard case and 12-month subscriptions. Yes, you read that right. Amazon positions the Fire HD 10 as a device that can do real work. Surprisingly, this is true as long as you don’t have to use Google apps. Fire HD 10 Amazon Fire OS isn’t locked yet, which isn’t the set of apps you’ll find in the Google Play Store. However, with a keyboard and a slightly better screen, the new Fire HD 10 is something like a netbook, a small, inexpensive, capable device that can go anywhere.
Little workhorse
The new Fire HD 10 has uniform bezels on all sides, but otherwise it’s no different on the outside. It still has a 10.1-inch 1080p display, but Amazon says it’s 10% brighter than the 2019 model. I couldn’t compare them side by side, but I had no problem using the Fire HD 10 in bright light. The screen won’t take your socks off, but it’s okay to browse the web, watch videos, and do anything else you can with that.
The extra RAM is immediately noticeable. There is no longer any scrolling, and opening apps is quick and smooth. I didn’t notice any significant interruptions or delays, as there have always been low-end Android tablets. Like last year’s 8-inch models, this update eventually turns the Fire HD 10 into a fast-paced device to make you realize you’re using it.
Battery life is about 12 hours. Of course, that depends on what you’re doing. Playing back-to-back movies will eat up the battery faster than surfing the net. But it is still among the much more expensive competitors. In terms of build quality, Fire tablets have always been surprisingly durable, large, and made of plastic shells. I’ve cracked the screen on two iPads, but I’ve never had the same thing happen with a Fire.
If you select the Plus model ($ 30 more) you get extra gigabytes of RAM, the option of wireless charging (see our guide favorite wireless chargers), and some additional colors to choose from. Amazon sent me the usual which Plus models to test. Most of the time I didn’t notice much difference, but for an extra $ 30, the extra RAM will serve to buy more evidence for the future.
The most interesting innovation is the productivity range with the Bluetooth keyboard and Microsoft 365 subscription. The latter assumes that Google HD software stands out in Fire HD 10. This doesn’t mean Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, or Gmail (you can connect to Gmail via Amazon’s default email app). Worst of all, web versions won’t even load into the included Silk web browser, and no other popular browser is available in the Amazon App Store.
Microsoft 365 is capable of doing all that Google’s online office suite can do, but if all of your colleagues use Google and need to edit documents shared on Google, it’s a debatable point. After playing Microsoft 365 for a week, I preferred it over Google’s offerings, but that doesn’t help me in the long run because I rely on Google apps for work.
