Jamaica has the United States to equalize in the World Cup qualifiers

Jamaica drew 1-1 with the United States in the World Cup qualifiers in Kingston on Tuesday after a disappointing young U.S. national team win against Mexico last week.

US striker Timothy Weah drew his first blood in the 11th minute, but West Ham United striker Michail Antonio equalized in the 22nd minute with a stunning long-range shot. Defender Damion Lowe made a run for the goal 84 minutes into the game but the home team’s far left defense managed to sort the situation out in the end.

The United States also escaped from behind in the 53rd minute when a close attempt by Jamaican Bobby De Cordova-Reid flew over the crossbar.

The U.S. national team was expected to dominate, against Jamaica and after winning the last four games a shocking 2-0 win over Mexico last week that saw the return of attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic. But a young U.S. team appeared to have lost strength on Tuesday.

“We knew we had to come and, you know, play our style of play and I think we didn’t quite get there,” Weah said. “… I think we’re glad we didn’t drop points.”

With an average age of 22 years and 341 days, the starting 11 were the second youngest team to take part in the World Cup qualifiers, US Soccer said. The team has 15 points in eight games and is well positioned to secure one of three automatic places in the 2022 Qatar World Cup in 2022, with six more games to go next year.

“About the youth of this team, the inexperience of this team … we are on the right track when you think about it,” coach Gregg Berhalter told reporters after the match. “We’ve been resilient and this team has character.”
