Taiwan has reported at least 29 new cases, the highest number of local transmission infections in a day since it exploded last year.
Taiwan’s Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang said on Friday that the island’s COVID-19 alert level should not be raised, and that it has more experience and resources than last year to deal with the pandemic.
The decision was announced by Taiwan on Friday, with at least 29 new cases, the highest number of locally infected infections in a single day since it erupted last year.
Su wrote on his Facebook page that Su said the next two weeks would be crucial in controlling the transmission chain.
“Compared to this time last year, we already have more experience and resources to deal with the pandemic,” he said.
“With the cooperation of central and local governments, the command center has subsequently found a chain of transmission between the confirmed cases, and there is no need to renew (alert level) for the time being.”
Taiwan has reported only 1,233 cases, most of them imported from abroad, with a population of about 24 million, a recent increase in domestic infections has terrified Taiwanese people and the stock market.
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung warned in a statement on Wednesday that the alert level could rise soon, closing all non-essential businesses, causing a major stock market crash and since then officials have underestimated the chances of that happening.
Taiwan has never entered a complete blockade.

Su said they would spend more to help people and industries affected by the pandemic, and expand preparations to fight infections.
“Everyone is critical in this fight,” he added.
The current set of infections has been linked to DNA sequencing with a first appearance at an airport hotel and pilots of Taiwan’s largest carrier, China Airlines Ltd, although the exact source of the transmission is clear.
