Taking the kids for a walk
[ad_1]
Man, I’m a professional geologist, so hiking, camping and backpacking are my job. But my family didn’t do that when I was growing up, and people are usually surprised when they learn that – the idea that you can have an outdoor career, growing up in a “outside” family.
But the way I see it now is that my family was in the open air, not some kind of American culture / REI. We spent a lot of time outside. And I had to explore and wander, as the structures seem forced, because the kids have to be small. What we did the most were “beach walks” from the time I grew up on the coast, but playing along the beach (spring weather in the fall) until we had the urge to turn the car around. Stop looking at rocks or shells, you might be staring at the waves, but there was no fixed lookout or goal, except that if you went far enough it was faster to turn around this entrance than to double back the car.
And now that I’m a professional with all sorts of structures and strict goals, I think my childhood was the best preparation for a career like mine that wasn’t “outside” in my spare time.
Okay, I also understand that it was a cartoon! And I love it. I think maybe parents shouldn’t be so hard on themselves to create “appropriate” experiences from an adult perspective.
