Dozens of people have been killed and injured at a hospital in southeastern Baghdad in a fire that was treating victims of coronavirus.

The fire at the Ibn al-Khatib Hospital in the Diyala Bridge area of the Iraqi capital occurred after an oxygen tank exploded, medical sources said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has ordered an investigation into the deadly fire and promised to hold anyone responsible for the negligence responsible.

In videos made on social media, firefighters were trying to put out the flames in the hospital when patients and relatives tried to flee the building. Witnesses said people jumped out of the window to escape the fire.

The incident sparked outrage on social media as Iraqis became angry with the government and demanded the release of the health minister.

Hospitals in Iraq have been eroded by decades of conflict and poor investment in medicines and hospital beds.
