The Southeast Asian country reported 9,635 new cases on Monday with the intention of having a third wave of coronavirus.

Thailand reported 9,635 new coronaviruses on Monday, a daily record, of more than 70 percent of cases in prisons, as incidents in the Southeast Asian country hit the third wave of the virus.

Thailand, with a population of 69 million, has yet to step up its COVID-19 vaccination program.

To date, it has administered 2.2 million doses to primary care workers and high-risk groups using vaccines developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech and AstraZeneca.

A wider pathway to vaccination is expected to begin in June with a locally manufactured AstraZeneca dose. The vaccine registry opened to the public over the weekend with the goal of vaccinating 70 percent of adults.

The government has sharpened restrictions on daily life in an attempt to stop the rise in infections.

Prisons in prisons have been stepped up with all inmates who need to wear masks and wash their hands frequently. The Department of Correction is also running a laboratory to study the virus in prisoners.

Thai media have also reported that the vaccine will also be extended to prisons next month, starting with those at high risk or over 60 years of age.

Thai prisons currently have about 310,000 people.

Local media reported on Monday that the cases announced in the north were the most recorded cases out of eight prisons in Chiang Mai prison, followed by Bangkok Remand prison.
