Ever since I graduated from university, I knew I would have to live alone someday …
I’ve always enjoyed living with friends and roommates. But I eagerly began to return home with myself, seeing what I wanted without voting, making questionable dinner choices without the risk of being in the side eyes. Last year, I went to the most comfortable apartment and maybe I’ll never look back.
For a while, it was understood that my boyfriend and I would surely live together as soon as the lease ended. We had already gone through an early coexistence, coming out of the plague; and living together seemed like the next natural step. But since I moved to my current location, I can’t imagine leaving.
My apartment has an interesting setup. I live on a stone floor in Brooklyn, which is everything to me; my three roommates live on other floors. We hardly see each other and it seems that I live more alone with the neighbors above, which is very ideal. It’s also the first place I’ve felt at home and I like to be alone. I like to hear my roommates walk through my door and know that no one is going unnoticed. I love not having to wait to use the shower or being able to bleach my hair in the morning while I’m watching Project Runway. The world worries me, my life can be piled up around me because I am alone. At the end of the busy week I like to buy flowers and scatter the oils as I go to sleep.
Living with someone else isn’t what I want yet, and I’ve decided that if it’s the last time I’ll live without a partner, pet, or child, I want to love. I want to become a sanctuary even more and I need to remember that when I am in bed with a big heart dog and a partner. So any future move is delayed. Now I’m going to buy more sunflowers for this weekend.
