The deadly stamp shuts down the advance of the Cameroon Africa Cup

Cameroon’s progress in the African National Cup was overshadowed by a stadium that killed at least six people outside the stadium when the host won against the Comoros.

The Estampede crowd struggled to get into the Olembe stadium in the capital Yaounde as Cameroon beat the Comoros 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

Strikers Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar saw Cameroon’s unbeaten lead in the 70th minute against the groundbreaking 132nd world championships played with a defender in the wake of a coronavirus outbreak.

Comoros also had to deal with playing 10 men for most of the match after Jimmy Abdou was sent off in the seventh minute for stepping on Moumi Ngamaleu’s ankle.

But the Comoros, who have reached the quarter-finals by defeating Ghana four-time African champions, have managed to achieve one of the goals of the tournament so far to shed light on the hope of a return. Youssouf M’Changama scored a free kick from 30 yards out in the 81st minute, but Comoros were unable to equalize.

Details of the tragedy outside the stadium were only confirmed after the match. Officials at nearby Messassi hospital said at least 40 people had been injured by the stampede.

“Some of the peeled are in serious condition,” said nurse Olinga Prudence. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialist hospital.”

Cameroon is hosting the famous African football tournament for the first time in 50 years.

Cameroon will play another tournament debutant in Douala on Saturday in the quarter-finals after beating Guinea Gambia 1-0 in another match of the day after Musa Barrow’s 71st goal.

Gambian Yusupha Njie was sent off in the 87th minute for kicking an opponent in the head in the head, but Egyptian referee Amin Omar also awarded a second yellow card to Guinea’s Ibrahima Conté in the first half.

Guinea’s Naby Keita was shown a yellow card after 80 minutes for slicing down an opponent.

Guinea had a clear chance to equalize late on the post, then hit the crossbar and blocked a goal shot in a row.
