GENEVA (Reuters) – The head of the World Trade Organization on Thursday told trade ministers he was optimistic about the imminent conclusion of multilateral talks on the fishing industry, but called for a “change of mindset” to close the last gaps.
“I think we are all really committed, but a change of mindset is needed to overcome the last gaps that continue to separate members,” CEO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told ministers at a closed-door meeting on his front page, according to a copy of his speech seen by Reuters.
The virtual conference is the first meeting of WTO trade ministers since 2017 and seeks to lay down rules to reduce subsidies that lead to overfishing after 20 years of talks.
