TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s economy minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who was in charge of directing the government’s pandemic response, defended his role on Wednesday after criticizing the management of blockade measures in bars and restaurants.
Nishimura, when asked if he intends to resign, said that “his responsibility is to prevent infections and ensure economic recovery.”
Nishimura caused a stir last week after banks suggested pressure on restaurants and bars that defied government blocking measures and suggested that beverage producers stop trading with them. He has since embraced the suggestions.
